Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, the nation's first designated wilderness area, was the home of the Mogollon culture and people from the late 1200’s through the early 1300’s. Located in the Gila National Forest and at the edge of the Gila Wilderness, it’s easy to get the sense of what it was like to live here back then.

Hovenweep National Monument is located along the Utah-Colorado border. These ancient Puebloan villages were built on mesa tops and in canyons The multi-story towers perched on canyon rims and balanced on boulders are impressive monuments to these early people’s building skills.  Many of these ruins still look recently built.
